We refer to local lad, Francis Crittall, whose father had an ironmongery business. 

When his mother injured herself while opening a wooden sash window (notorious for being too tight or too loose..) he attempted to see if a metal version might prove more practical.

It did.  He started experimenting in a shed, formed his own company in 1889, and went from three employees making steel windows to over 500 in 1918.

Francis was not content to sell his products at home: he promoted his goods very successfully in India, where wooden windows were prone to swell in the tropical heat - as well as providing a tasty lunch for the rapacious white ants.

He also built a model village with shops and social halls in 1926 - Silver End, near Witham.
